Chapter 22

Their next stop was at Dean Wicklund's office. If he had a receptionist, she wasn't on duty. They found him with his arms buried inside a large copy machine.

"Are you taking it apart or putting it back together?" Weber asked.

"Well, I started out trying to clear a paper jam, and it's gone downhill from there. Inside here, there are four little plastic fingers that guide the paper through its path, or at least I think that's what they're for. I had to pull them up to get the paper loose and now I can't get them to go back into place."

"I'm pretty handy with things like that," Coop said, "Do you want me to take a look?"

"Sure, if you don't mind. It would save me having to call to have a tech from the office supply place over in Show Low come out. And who knows when he would get here?"

The deputy rolled up his sleeves and took the attorney's place. Wicklund wiped black toner from his hands with a paper towel, then shook Weber's hand and asked, "What can I do for you gentlemen, today?"

"I'd like to talk to Mrs. Duncan. I tried calling her cell phone number, but all I got was voicemail. Do you know where we might find her?"

"Can I ask what this is about?"

"We're just doing some follow up on her husband's death."

"Follow up?"

"Yes, sir. I got the autopsy report this morning and I wanted to tell her that. And she and Sonny Duncan are going to have to coordinate how they want to handle Mr. Duncan's funeral service. Just things like that."

"I'll be happy to pass that information along to her for you."

"That's fine," Weber said. "But I'd still like to speak to her myself. Is there a problem with that?"

"No, not a problem. But as her attorney, it's in her best interest that I serve as an intermediary. As we both know, you and Mrs. Duncan have had a couple of encounters that haven't gone so well."

"Look, Mr. Wicklund, I'm not trying to jam your client up, or anything like that. I don't have anything against Mrs. Duncan. And while I'm sorry that things got off to a bad start between us, it's not like I went out there to the hog farm looking for trouble."

"I understand that," the attorney said. "However, Mrs. Duncan is in a rather fragile state at this moment, as I'm sure you can understand, given the circumstances. I just think it would be better to do things this way. You said you got her voicemail. Did you leave a message?"

"Yeah, I did. I just thought maybe..."

"Not to be rude, Sheriff Weber, but if she wants to talk to you I'm sure she'll call back. Otherwise, I'm not at liberty to give you her current location."

"I see."

"Got it," Coop said, closing the copy machine and plugging it back in.

"What was wrong with it?"

"Those little plastic guides or fingers you were having a problem with needed to be slid over just a tad bit to the right to click back into place.
